Support for the Introduction of COIL

In order to introduce COIL into a wider range of educational activities, a university-wide support system and capacity building among those involved in the activities are indispensable. The International Affairs Center provides training for teaching and administrative staff, provides support by renting out equipment, and welcomes inquiries and consultations at any time.

Workshop

On July 19, 2019, we held a workshop mainly for the faculty members of our university to explain the basic purpose of COIL and how it is practiced and promoted in the United States, Japan, and around the world. With this, we aimed to deepen their understanding of COIL (cosponsored by the University-wide FD Committee) and the opportunities it presents for internationalizing their classes.

We invited Professor Keiko Ikeda from Kansai University to the workshop as a speaker. Kansai University has been pioneering efforts in COIL, such as developing COIL networks with many universities in Asia, South America, and Africa, starting with the COIL class held in the spring semester of 2014.

Workshop Detail:

  1. Lectures by the Speakers
Kansai University's COIL Initiatives (Reference: Kansai University COIL “KU-COIL” Homepage)

  2. Introduction of Examples in the University and Q & A
  • The School of Nursing (Specially Appointed Professor Watanabe, Lecturer Negishi)
“COIL-type Classes: Initiatives by the School of Nursing.”
  • The Graduate School of the Integrated Pharmaceutical and Nutritional Sciences (Professor Kurokawa)
“Examples of COIL-type Lectures in Education at the Graduate School - University of California, Davis”
We will continue to hold training and workshops in the future.

Key Points When Choosing Equipment

When choosing equipment used for COIL-type education, the audio quality is the most important condition, rather than the quality of the images.

It is desirable to prepare microphones and speakers separately as those built into PCs may not be suitable for COIL-type classes. If the number of participants is large (eight or more as a guide), you will need high-performance equipment.

Please note that howling may occur if you use a microphone and a speaker at the same time.

You will need to buy a webcam if your PC does not have one. There are Windows-only and Mac-only webcams, so you need to check with the retailer when purchasing one.

Rental Equipment

The International Affairs Center has rental equipment for implementing COIL-type education. The Center can rent it out temporarily, so please consult with us.
